It seems that while demand for good CIOs that are competent with both business and technology issues is increasing, the supply of potential candidates is decreasing. That's one of the findings in a report released by the Society for Information Management. On May 16, the Advanced Practices Council examined what companies should be doing now to groom their next CIO and attempted to establish 'best practices.' The 2010 CIO is expected to be more of a leader than a manager. CIOs will take on more of a strategist role, while building stronger relationships with partners and customers. The process of managing IT projects and infrastructure will be easier to delegate in the future, the study states. All of this underscores the importance for training and mentorship programs within IT departments.
