And remember that with increasing consolidation, mergers and careful scrutiny of the bottom line, even the best and brightest CIO can find him or herself out of a job. So, make sure that your exit strategy is always ready to go.

While every company these days needs a CIO, things do sometimes change. Here's just one opening mentioned by InformationWeek: a major university needs a CIO. Well, you might have to move to Ohio but that's hardly the worst thing that can happen. Outsourcing has all sorts of accidental tradeoffs and domestic job loss is often one of them. So the next time you think you are in a job until you retire, think again. And keep the emergency hatch open for a speedy and productive exit.
