CIO role expanding beyond just technology

In the quest to gain the required business-side experience, one CIO went on the production floor and built an engine alongside factory workers to understand the process and gain insight to a customer's business needs. It's all part of the growing career trend for CIOs to become business leaders as well as technology leaders. In addition to firsthand knowledge of the business and production aspects, experts say today's tech leaders also need to step over into other business units, such as marketing and even the legal unit, to begin educating themselves on issues that also involve IT.
