You've had a hard day at the office, and you are heading home when your cell phone rings and your second in command tells you that your system has been hacked. Despite your best efforts and the most expensive tools on the market, there were not enough mechanisms to prevent a criminal from hacking in and taking valuable information from your database. So what are you to do as the CIO?

First of all, every CIO must make computers, users and their network communications authenticated and identifiable. Hardware must be strong enough to repel hardware hacks, and blocked from rebooting if the hardware is hacked. All OSes and programs must be authenticated and approved before running. Users must be prevented from installing what they want without prior approval. Workers must be trained and retrained on security. With any luck, your system will become hack proof, and you will have an uneventful ride from your office to your home every day of the week.
