A challenging job at SF International Airport

John Payne has a tough job as the CIO at San Francisco International Airport. He's got 1,200 employees, and his job is a lot more than making sure that technology works so that the planes get off on time and land promptly. His most important job is operating the systems that help the passengers easily navigate the facility, not to mention IT security and disaster recovery in a region that may be hit by a major earthquake or a man-made disaster at any time. Payne sat down with ZDnet recently to talk about how he handles his job and keeps the airport humming. "We are very attuned to (the fact that) people have a choice and...could go to Oakland or San Francisco or San Jose or San Francisco, we have to compete for those folks, those passengers," he says.
