Being small can have its good points. Smaller tech teams and businesses are often more nimble, more proactive and quicker to respond to both customer and operations issues. That's where Backcountry.com was in the outdoor sporting industry, and the company wanted to grow and grow big. To make it happen the IT staff went full-force into open source technology, pulling in a variety of open source systems including Linux and MySQL. To make it happen it had to hire on a slew of programming help, but the move to open source--from email to enterprise resource planning--is paying off in revenue and business growth.
