California Air Resources Board dodges hack

Last week, a hacker targeted the website of the Marin County, California municipal government and started re-directing visitors to porn sites. In the wake of a flood of complaints, the federal government's General Services Administration (GSA) which administers "ca.gov" domains, determined that the best course of action was to begin shutting down the domain extensions, while computer security experts worked on neutralizing the hack. The decision sent many California agencies into disarray, but the California Air Resources Board (ARB) immediately executed a back-up plan and weathered the event pretty seamlessly. The agency had previously developed a back-up site hosted on a separate domain. It was a simple static page--and not a mirrored site--that was able to be brought up quickly to inform visitors on how to reach appropriate personnel to continue their business operations.
