A host of new books dealing with corporate culture, leadership, negotiation and other career-boosting topics are on sale this fall. CIOInsight's Dennis McCafferty put together a list of 13 that might be of interest to CIOs. Some deal with subjects relevant to all business leaders, while others cover tech-specific issues, including mobile IT, virtualization and software development. Here are three that look particularly interesting:

  • "Buy-In: Saving Your Good Idea from Getting Shot Down," by John Kotter and Lorne Whitehead. Most CIOs have had some experience along the way struggling to persuade the CEO and CFO to do what's right. The authors of "Buy-In" share some tips on dodging strategies designed to derail your ideas.
  • "The CIO Edge: Seven Leadership Skills You Need to Drive Results," by Graham Waller, George Hallenbeck and Karen Rubenstruck. As the title states, CIOs can't get by with tech savvy alone; inter-personal skills and a talent for inspiring are needed as well.
  • "What I Didn't Learn in Business School: How Strategy Works in the Real World," by Jay Barney and Trish Gorman Clifford. This book explores the reality of what drives business, which is not taught in the classroom: Politics and personalities. Enough said.
