Businesses seek variety in virtualization

Variety is the spice of life, and apparently this saying holds true when it comes to desktop virtualization as well. According to recent research from Enterprise Management Associates, enterprises using desktop virtualization often use more than one approach, reports CIO.com.

The publication decided to delve into this idea further by outlining the five most prevalent "flavors" of desktop virtualization and the pros and cons of each method. If your company is one of many that mix and match virtualization techniques, you may want to review CIO.com's list and make sure you're not overlooking a delivery method that may work well for your company.

The list breaks down the virtualization world into five basic groups:

  • Remote Hosted Desktops (Example: Citrix XenDesktop, Wyse ThinOS, Pano Logic Device Remote, nComputing thin clients
  • Remote Virtual Applications (Example: Citrix XenApps, Microsoft Remote Desktop Services)
  • Remote Hosted Dedicated Virtual Desktops (Example: VMware View, Microsoft Remote Desktop Services, ThinApps Composer, Microsoft VDI suite)
  • Local Virtual Applications (Example: VMware ThinApp, Microsoft Application Virtualization)
  • Local Virtual OS (for example: Citrix Dazzle and Receiver, Wyse PocketCloud, TCX)
