Bulletin: H-1B visas still available

There's usually a scramble for H-1B visas for foreign workers, most of them seeking IT jobs in the United States. But with the downturn in the economy and many projects on hold, the competition for temporary work visas has changed.

The applications for the 85,000 visas usually are snapped up within days after they become available every year on April 1. But this year, about 20,000 are still available for fiscal 2010, according to an article in Information Week. The publication calls it "startling" that there are so many H-1B visas still available, especially in contrast with the visa shortage the last few years.

This situation runs contrary to arguments from groups, such as U.S. scientists, still arguing that there are not enough H-1B visas available for scientists. It's quite amazing how something can turn on its head so quickly, and it raises the question: Will the explosive issue of H-1B visas finally be laid to rest?

It's just more proof that the H-1B program *does* work and just lacks the flexibility to adjust with economic demands. Nothing to cry foul about: Economy is bad, so LCAs are harder to come by and corporate demand for additional foreign labor drops. Economy is good - LCAs are easier to get and shortage of qualified US workers leads to increased H-1B demand. The only problem with the H-1B program is its inflexible and arbitrary annual cap, that simple.

Just shows that because of the economy we don't need guest worker visas. A lot of h1bs are "out of status" and must go home. With millions of Americans unemployed there is no labor shortage.
These guest workers are only hired for one reason because they are cheap. Most of them are below average because of the lack of conversational english skills.
