A break-in at one of British Telecom's (BT) exchanges in London resulted in thousands of customers being left with no telephone and Internet services. The theft of specific technical equipment brought about the massive disruption, which officers from Westminster CID are currently investigating. It appears that the thieves were after a heist of copper wire. In the meantime, BT has issued an apology for the ensuing disruption, even as engineers worked around the clock to restore service. According to The Register, the affected exchange serves about 3,000 residential premises, as well as over 4,000 non-residential ones in central London.
