Bringing mainframes into the IT mainstream

Mainframes may be an old idea, but they are still popular in the workplace. A new Information Week survey found that 831 business tech professionals say mainframes are still alive and being used at their offices.

However, there are some cautionary tales about mainframes. "The distributed model of computing is far more powerful than the centralized mainframe model," one respondent told Information Week. Another says he would consider moving to a mainframe only if it were running as a Windows Server 64-bit OS with virtual Windows Servers in both 64 and 32 bit. Dream on, buddy.

Is it possible that mainframes and distributed computing teams could become one?

Some companies already have made this transition. Information Week reports that mainframes are in use in 90 percent of Fortune 1,000 companies and a large percentage of mid-market companies.

About 70 percent of mainframe users, among poll respondents, have expanded their deployments over the past year, despite the economy.
