The Internet is running out of space and may run out of network capability in just two years, according to The Internet Singularity, Delayed: Why Limits in Internet Capacity Will Stifle Innovation on the Web, a study conducted by Nemertes Research. And that's not the only bad news. The report estimates that it will cost between $42 and $55 billion to increase broadband access capacity. "This groundbreaking analysis identifies a critical issue facing the Internet -- that we must take the necessary steps to build out network capacity or potentially face Internet gridlock that could wreak havoc on Internet services," said Larry Irving, co-chairman of the Internet Innovation Alliance. Steps are being taken in the federal government to expand the IPv4 capacity of the Internet to IPv6 in the next two years. And there is already a scramble to keep up with other countries around the world that already are full-steam ahead to enlarging the Internet's capabilities globally.
