Are you ready for the boomers to retire?
When a baby boomer retires, he leaves behind more than an empty desk. It's likely he leaves behind a knowledge gap that is not easily filled. And it's also likely that you did not do everything you could to gather his useful information and insights before he left.
So what's a CIO to do to avoid this gap?
- Make sure your workers still on the job are skilled in more than one programming language.
- Replace mission-critical experience through mentoring. Transfer knowledge by partnering employees with the soon-to-be retired ones.
- Document information that a boomer may have and put it in a repository.
In short, make the transition an easy one instead of scrambling for information after the baby boomer exits.
