Are CIOs wearing too many hats?

If you're a CIO, your job has probably expanded dramatically beyond the mainstream tasks of a IT leader. Some CIOs are quitting and others are rebelling against the ever-increasing job requirements.

This week's InformationWeek.com talks about this overload and points to two CIOs who have stepped down and the successors who have defined their jobs in much narrower ways.

While the debate continues, it's interesting to see whether CIOs can effectively shoulder additional duties beyond the full-time CIO jobs or whether this is a prescription for failure. There is no right or wrong approach in figuring out what a CIO should be doing. But a CIO must have the support to become an effective leader. If that is not provided, then the additional chores merely make it easier for the CIO to fail.
