Air Force IT project ahead of schedule

Usually when a story about government IT hits the headlines, it's about failure and project cost overrun. But the Air Force's efforts to modernize its technology operations are getting kudos and applause, not only for achieving project targets but for achieving smarter business operations. The goal is ambitious--to move from 1,700 separate systems and 19,000 applications to an integrated unit of 700 systems and 10,000 applications by the year 2012--but so far Air Force IT staffers seem to be making good progress.
