Seven reasons websites aren't safe

You can't go anywhere anymore. In the past, conventional wisdom said it was safe to surf the net as long as you didn't head to porn sites or ones that offered stock tips and games. But research from Sophos, the Boston-based IT security and control firm, finds that there are many infected webpages--23,500 new infected ones for the first six months of this year.

Richard Wang, who manages Sophos' Boston lab, sat down with CSOonline recently and outlined reasons websites are no longer safe. Among his reasons:

  • An increasing number of ads are polluted.
  • Shoddy site development allows for corrupt sites.
  • A content provider's log-in credentials can be stolen.
  • Malware might be hidden on your own machine.

With all these variables, it's important that you keep your employees aware of the dangers lurking out there.
