Five lessons when merging data centers
It's important not to forget about consolidating data centers when companies merge. It's a big change, and it means there are loads of data that must be consolidated and a map must be created for the merged companies to find the data.
"A data center project is a very non-trivial exercise," John Bennett, worldwide lead for HP's data center transformation solutions group, told CIO.com. "It means the relocation of applications and data, the modernization of infrastructure and, at the same time, you have a business to run, so you don't want to disrupt applications."
Here are a few tips for doing it right:
- Focus on the people, not just the technology.
- Fewer consultants mean lower costs.
- Work slowly and carefully so you do not miss any steps.
Make sure you have a plan and stick to the timeline. After all, the only people you hurt by moving too quickly and carelessly are the workers in the merged operation.
