25 open-source releases coming this year

It's a good year to be in the market for open-source technology. This week's ComputerWorld.com surveyed what's out there and found plenty of cool new items coming onto the market from browsers and operating systems to collaboration software and development tools.

Here are a few to look for:

  • Google Inc. has plans for its Chrome Browser. Mac and Linux versions of the browser are in development.
  • Red Hat Fedora 11 will be released this summer. The goal is to make Fedora boot and shut down faster--try 20 seconds.
  • Moonlight, an open-source implementation of Microsoft's Silverlight, is a new browser plug-in for streaming video and Internet apps.
  • Kaltura's Community Edition will be launched under the GNU General Public License which allows any website to build its own YouTube-like video portal, fully independent of Kaltura.

With so many new products heading to market, it will be up to you to decide what you can implement and how it can make your operation run more smoothly and efficiently. But there is no lack of new open-source innovation on the way.
