BlackBerry vs. All Other Smartphones
The BlackBerry, stalwart smartphone of the enterprise, took hits from every corner this year as more workplaces learned to embrace the iPhone and other consumer-oriented devices. Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) and Google (NASDAQ: GOOG) steadily beat the enterprise drum, adding security and productivity features to their products.
During the third quarter, 44 percent of smartphones sold came with Android, while just 22 percent came with Research in Motion's (NASDAQ: RIMM) operating system, according to figures from the NPD Group.
Meanwhile, Dell--not exactly an icon of enterprise IT either--reportedly told 25,000 of its employees to trade in their BlackBerrys for Dell's Venue Pro this fall. In an even more aggressive move against Research in Motion, Dell was planning to start encouraging its customers to use the Windows Phone 7-powered Venue Pro as well.
While RIM claimed continued growth in the market, major corporations, including Bank of America (NYSE: BAC) and Citigroup (NYSE: C) said they were testing iPhones.
