Mistakes managers can avoid

In this economic climate, IT executives are under the gun to do better and save more money. Yet there are plenty of mistakes that IT professionals make when trying to make the best of a bad situation. This week's CIOUpdate.com shares a few things that managers often do wrong during tough times:

• Hide the truth: Instead, tell your staff if your budget's been cut by 20 percent or some other number. Get their input on how to deal with this change.
• Ask for 110 percent on everything: It's better to help them prioritize. Let your employees know what projects need their undivided time and attention.
• Tell employees they are lucky to have their jobs: Good IT workers are always in demand. Tell your employees that you appreciate their work.
• Shoot down new ideas: Instead, encourage your employees to make suggestions.

Make sure you have the management expertise to get through the tough times and help your employees deal with it too.
