Customers Gain New Control with Simple Migration to Virtualized Platforms and the Cloud with No Upgrade Costs

BERLIN--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- 3rd International SOA Symposium (Booth #2)

Layer 7 Technologies, the leader in XML Gateways for SOA and cloud, today announced the first portable license for XML Gateways and SOA appliances. The Layer 7 Freedom License allows customers to move SecureSpan™ or CloudSpan production licenses across hardware, software, VMware, Xen, Redhat KVM, CA 3Tera and Amazon EC2 without incurring any additional cost. Moreover, with the Freedom License, customers can refresh their SOA appliance hardware without incurring the usual forklift upgrade cost, as is the case with other hardware XML Gateway vendors like IBM and Oracle.

“The Layer 7 Freedom License provides us a tremendous amount of flexibility in how we deploy Layer 7 XML Gateways,” said Guido Hofstetter, technical product manager at Swisscom. “Like many telecommunications companies, we have a complex mix of development, staging, production and disaster recovery environments, some of which are virtualized. Layer 7 gives us the freedom to adapt our mix of Gateways in each environment while avoiding lock-in to any one platform.”

According to a recent Gartner report on vendor licensing, Stewart Ross Buchanan, Gartner research vice president in IT Asset Management and Procurement, states: “Vendor licensing terms rarely permit the redeployment of existing licenses to virtual servers, virtual desktops or external service providers (ESPs) without additional cost.…Virtualization has proved itself as an enabling technology, but it has already caused cost management problems in conventional license deployments.”*

“Customers want options around how and where they deploy their XML Gateway licenses, and with cloud and virtualized environments becoming ever more popular, they don’t want to be locked into any single form factor,” said Paul Rochester, CEO of Layer 7 Technologies. “They also don’t want a forklift overhaul every time they go to refresh their hardware. With Layer 7’s Freedom License they avoid lock-in and major upgrade costs.”
