i-SAFE Expands Curriculum, Publishes Two Safety Books during Internet Safety Month
CARLSBAD, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- June is Internet Safety Month, a time proclaimed each year by Congress for organizations, law enforcement, educators, community leaders, parents, and volunteers to increase their efforts to raise the level of awareness for online safety in the United States. “Raising awareness and being proactive about Internet-related issues is so important, especially now when virtually every child is born with a digital footprint and Internet access is nearly universal among kids and teens,” says Teri Schroeder, i-SAFE CEO. “Each of us can do more to promote safe and responsible Internet use at home and in our community.”
At i-SAFE, Internet Safety Month is the time we assess the success of the past academic year, identify trends, and develop new curriculum for the upcoming term. Basic Concepts of Online Social Behavior for Non-Readers or Beginning Readers is a beginning lesson for grades K-2. Online Risks: When Private Goes Public will be new this fall for third and fourth graders. The new Cyber Security video lesson interactively provides older students perspective about how the Internet has evolved past Web 2.0, and the implications for Homeland Security. And, several lessons promoting Digital Literacy have just been developed for high school students, including the timely, Current Events: Media and Society which is designed to be taught during an election year.
The high point of this Internet Safety Month is the publishing of two i-SAFE activity books for children, teens, and young adults by Jossey-Boss™ a footprint of Wiley™. The books, i-SAFE Internet Safety Activities: Reproducible Projects for Teachers and Parents, Grades K-8 and i-SAFE Internet Life Skills Activities: Reproducible Projects on Learning to Safely Handle Life Online, Grades 9-12. They will be available June 26th.
“Since 2003, when i-SAFE conceived and spearheaded the first Internet Safety Month resolutions in both the House and Senate, we’ve continued to push the envelope to raise awareness and empower more and more students through education, both in and out of the classroom,” says Ms. Schroeder. At that time i-SAFE’s curriculum was being taught to just 15,000 students in 24 states. Now, i-SAFE lessons have been taught to more than 30 million students in schools in all fifty states and around the world, thanks to the continued support of Congress, partnerships with corporate stakeholders, including Verizon, VeriSign, and Intel, as well as subscribing schools, districts and entire state Departments of Education. “i-SAFE’s dedication to making a positive impact on the children of the world, through digital literacy and citizenship, continues all year round.”
