SAN ANTONIO--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Seventy-three percent of employees are okay with viewing their pay stub electronically, according to results from the 2011 “Getting Paid In America” survey recently conducted by the American Payroll Association. The process known as “paperless payroll” sees companies deliver payroll data through a secure online portal instead of the traditional paper pay statement.

The annual "Getting Paid In America" survey asked respondents a series of questions about electronic pay options and methods. When asked, "How would you feel if your company no longer gave you a paper pay statement but instead provided a breakdown of your paycheck through an online portal?” 73 percent responded either "would like it" or "my company does it and I like it.” An additional 18 percent were open to the method responding that it "wouldn't matter." Only nine percent would not like such a program.

“The Getting Paid in America survey validates the same clear trend that we are seeing: employees are not only comfortable with technology for their payroll and HR information, they expect to have it,” said Scott Scherr, president, CEO and founder of Ultimate Software. “Today, leading employers look at technology not only as a way to increase efficiency and information access across the organization, but also as a way to enhance employee engagement and loyalty.”

Additional survey results further showed employee openness to electronic pay options with only four percent of respondents indicating they’re paid by paper paycheck. The remaining 96 percent are paid by direct deposit, paycards, or prepaid reloadable cards. All three payment methods allow companies to pay employees, even those without a bank account, electronically.

“Our survey shows that employees overwhelmingly prefer the convenience and safety of electronic payment methods,” said Dan Maddux, executive director of the American Payroll Association. “Electronic pay is simply safer and more convenient, saving employees from having to go to their bank or check cashing store to cash their paychecks.”

The “Getting Paid In America” survey was held in conjunction with APA’s annual public awareness campaign, National Payroll Week (NPW), held annually the week of Labor Day. More than 29,000 employees responded to the survey, providing insight into how workers are paid in America. For complete results, visit www.nationalpayrollweek.com.
