IBM develops new data-masking technology

IBM researchers in Israel have developed new data-masking technology that filters sensitive data from unauthorized viewers before it reaches their computer screens, according to an article in DarkReading.com.

The MAGEN project--also known as the Masking Gateway for Enterprises prototype--works as a shield, allowing users to view only enough customer or patient information to do their jobs. Confidential information from databases that might include such sensitive items as credit card numbers or patient health records are protected, according to the article.

IBM has applied for patents for MAGEN's image-manipulation and word-scrambling techniques. Big Blue eventually plans to roll the MAGEN technology into both product and service offerings.
