Apple's Windows port of Safari [1] might not be much to write home about but that hasn't stopped the company's PR machine from going into full-swing. After patching a few vulnerabilities rather quickly, Safari made headlines again today when Apple announced that the beta was downloaded 1 million times within its first 48 hours of availability. However, as Ars Technica points out, "If we compare this release to Mozilla's debut of Firefox 1.0 back in 2004, we see that Apple's 1 million in 48 hours fails in comparison to Mozilla's 2.5 million in the same period of time." Admittedly, we're comparing apples and oranges here, as Safari 3.0 is in beta whereas Firefox 1.0 was a final release. Nonetheless, I'm a bit skeptical as to whether this heralds the success of Safari on the Windows platform.
