If 2007 was the year of the Eee PC [1] then 2008 will see the attack of the clones [2]. Everyone in the industry currently has their eyes on the Eee and with component costs continuing to fall, 2008 could see OEMs engaging in a race to the bottom to see who can produce the cheapest, smallest laptop [3]. While it seems likely that ultraportable machines and modern smartphones will merge at some point, 2008 will see a continued demand for full-featured portable PCs that can get the job done on the cheap.
